Oscars passed

The Oscars came and went which means that my blog will be turned into movie reviews. But this post will be some of my cheers and jeers for the oscars.

Cheers: Best Cinematography
There Will Be Blood had the most amazing cinematography that I've seen all year. My favorite shot was Daniel running holding his son and the camera pans back and forth between him and the exploding oil. I would make love to that shot. Sweet, sweet love.

Jeers: Best Special Effects
Cmon. Transformers!

Cheers: Best Actress
Marion Colliard deserved that oscar as much as Daniel Day Lewis deserved his. I'm very happy the academy recognized her performance.

Jeers: Best Original Screenplay
Juno's screenplay made me vomit. I am even more upset about the BAFTA's because Juno's screenplay beat The Lives of Others. REALLY? The Lives of Others is a brilliantly written and directed and acted movie. The last line in that movie "No, it's for me" is one of the most touching lines I have ever heard.

Cheers: Jon Stewart
He had me in tears from laughter the whole night.

Jeers: Best Director and Best Picture
Although, I liked No Country a great deal, this should have been Paul Thomas Anderson's year.

Cheers: Best Supporting Actress
Although I was cheering for Blanchett's Dylan, Tilda Swinton definetly deserved it as well and her acceptance speech made me chuckle.

Jeers: Oscar pool
I lost the oscar pool at my friend's oscar party.

Best Supporting Actor

I think this category is the most crowded this year and the strongest.

Casey Affleck- Great actor and I loved Gone Baby Gone this past year but I have not gotten a chance to see The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Philip Seymour Hoffman- Again, I haven't gotten a chance to see Charlie Wilson's War but he is one of my top favorite actors.

Hal Holbrook- Into The Wild was a fantastic movie and I felt very snubbed by the academy this year. Holbrook gave a deeply touching performance in Into The Wild and I'm glad it got recognized by this nomination.

Javier Bardem- This man is for sure the front-runner for his performance in No Country For Old Men. He did amazingly and gave a chilling performance that was required. If he wins, I will be satisfied.

Tom Wilkinson- I want Tom Wilkinson to win the award. He made Michael Clayton for me. He outacted George Clooney and the rest of the cast. I would love nothing more than him and Cate Blanchett to share supporting acting awards this year.

Juno

What I Liked About Juno:
  • The Soundtrack: I very much like the Moldy Peaches and I enjoyed the soundtrack a great deal.

What I Disliked About Juno:
  • Was Not Funny: I hardly cracked a smile throughout the movie. With a cast like Juno's, that should not happen
  • Was Not Touching: I thought it tried to be heartfelt but really failed. I did not care much for any of the characters
  • The Script: Anytime any character opened their mouth and said anything, I wanted to shoot myself. I don't care if the dialog is realistic or not realistic but it was outright annoying and distracting. It was not witty. Juno beat out The Lives of Others at the BAFTAs for best screenplay. I have noooo idea how. The Lives of Others is one of the most powerful films of the past few years.
There you have it. Fuck Juno.

Best Actor

Let me just get this entry out of the way. This is the category I feel strongest about.

George Clooney: I liked Michael Clayton. I liked George Clooney in it. I loved his final scene in the movie. However, I didn't feel blown away by his performance. I felt he was outshined by Tom Wilkinson in that movie.

Johnny Depp: He's a very fun actor. Sweeney Todd was very enjoyable. He has had much better performances though.

Tommy Lee Jones: I gotta be honest. I haven't seen In the Valley of Elah

Viggo Mortenson: This was my favorite Viggo perfomance (yes, even better than Hidalgo). Eastern Promises is a very chilling and powerful movie. He gave a very strong and occasionally brave performance. And if you've seen it, there is one scene that will stick with you.

Daniel Day Lewis: BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR. Simply amazing. There Will Be Blood grabs you by the nuts, holds a tight grip for nearly 3 hours, and then rips your nuts off, so to speak. Daniel Day Lewis is just absolutely spectacular. If he does not win the Oscar, someone will get hurt.

Hello and Welcome

I have such passionate feelings about the Academy Awards this year, I decided to start my own blog about it. I will be posting who I think should win what award and why as well as other blogs I feel like making.
